Super Mario Bros. Wonderisn’t out for three days, but it’s already up and running on PC in 60fps, 4k thanks to emulators. That means modders have their hands on Nintendo’s newest platformer, and one of the first things they’ve done is change whatthe little talking flowersays.

Ideally, you want to be welcomed into a Mario game with an easy-going, bliss level. Something nice to set the scene and get you comfortable with the mechanics. Maybe you meet a cute character who hands out useful tips while guiding you to the first flag. Not in Contendo’s version. Instead, they run into a talking flower proudly saying “**** you! " every time they run past. It’s like walking through [insert your local city] with [insert your rival football team]’s shirt on.

They haven’t just altered the text either, but the sound it plays. Apparently, it’s pretty easy to swap the audio files, so modders could put together a voice pack for the talking flower to make them say a whole range of different things across the entire game. Pop a “surprise mother*****” or a cheeky “allons-y” in there. The downside is that it compresses the audio file, but a crispy “**** you” is a **** you all the same.

Since Contendo put out the clip, Switch Toolbox got an update that makes modding the talking flower even easier, specifically its text. While so far this has mostly been used for memes and clips that completely clash with Mario’s happy-go-lucky tone, there might be a more practical use for it down the line.

Modders could use it to build custom levels with their own voice lines, telling stories through the flowers' dialogue. We’re already seeing something a bit like this thanks to teesam. It’s not a custom level, but they managed to create Sans' head fromUndertaleout of blocks. They then popped a flower on top who says, “SANS???”

Of course, since Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been pirated and emulated before launch, spoilers (whatever that might mean for a Mario game) are spreading online. However, this is becoming a common occurrence for new first-party Nintendo games, asthe same happened for Tears of the Kingdom.

People are already ploughing through Wonder, sharing screenshots and videos of later and yet-to-be-revealed zones. If you wanna go in completely blind and avoid seeing anything Nintendo hasn’t already shown, best to stay off Twitter and Reddit for a few days.
