If you own aNintendo Switchthen you’ve probably spent the past weekend playing, or at least thinking about playing,Super Mario Bros. Wonder. However, Mario’s newest 2D adventure isn’t the only series-defining, Game of the Year contender to hit the Switch in 2023.Tears of the Kingdomlaunched less than six months ago,Nintendo’s first $70 game, and its popularity means price reductions for the latest Zelda game will be few and far between.
Perhaps Nintendo wants to catch the eye of all those Wonder-buying Switch owners this week as it has applied one of those rare price reductions to Tears of the Kingdom. If you buy theBreath of the Wildsequel at Walmart right now, you’ll pay just $47.95 as opposed to the usual $69.99. Whether you buy a lot of Switch games or just the big ones, you’ll know that bestsellers going on sale, especially by this much and so soon after launch, is very rare.
Look at games likeMario Kart 8 DeluxeandSuper Mario Odyssey, for example. Both are years old, and you rarely find them for less than the price they retailed for at launch since both still sell so well. Mario Kart is regularly in the top ten best sellers on any given week, perhaps even more so than before in 2023 as its character and track waves of DLC have continued to roll out. Breath of the Wild is also rarely reduced in price, and it’s actually a full dollar more than Tears of the Kingdom at Walmart right now.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to the Nintendo Switch hit Breath of the Wild. In it, Link must team up with Princess Zelda to rid Hyrule of another threat to its existence.
Perhaps Tears of the Kingdom’s sales haven’t been as big as Nintendo hoped, although I highly doubt that. My guess is this is the first attempt to boost the Zelda game’s sales as we turn the corner into the holiday season, and also preparation for a whole new wave of Switch owners. Again, with Wonder launching last week, a lot of people will have bought Switch consoles just to play it. They see a game as renowned as Tears of the Kingdom for a reduced price, perhaps they pick that up with their new console too.
It seems all but confirmed that the Switch will be replaced by a new Nintendo console in 2024. That may well be another reason why Tears of the Kingdom has received a temporary price cut at Walmart. Sell as many copies now before attention shifts to what’s next. There’s still plenty more to come on the Switch, though.Super Mario RPG’s remake next month, and a number of new games in 2024 includingPrince Peach: ShowtimeandMario vs. Donkey Kong.
