Horrorgames have come a long way and evolved significantly in the past decades. New consoles and styles, new narratives and ideas, all these elements tend to inspire the next era of horror. While new games and stories are constantly coming out, it’s always nice to revisit the classics. From nostalgic favorites to underrated gems, a variety of older horror games deserve attention.

As a result, there are a multitude of horror games that deserve to be revisited and revised for a new audience and modern, powerful consoles. Here are some of the best and most unique horror games that truly deserve to be remastered for the contemporary world.

8Alone In The Dark

A puzzle-filled, haunted mansion exploring horror tale, Alone in the Dark is a classic game. The only reason this is placed so low on the list is because Alone in The Dark has a full and proper remake starring David Harbour and Jodie Comer as the main characters.

That, however, doesn’t mean that the original games shouldn’t be experienced as their own adventures by players. Alone in the Dark has often been credited as one of the original and most influential survival horror games, inspiring many games and their stories. A remaster of the original would contrast well with the remake.

Sometimes, horror isn’t terrifying and haunting and psychological. Sometimes, horror games just need to be a fun time where you get toshoot up zombiesin excessively violent ways. That is exactly what theLeft 4 Deadgames offer the world, and it’s exactly what the games excel at.

WhileBack 4 Bloodis definitely supposed to be the spiritual successor of the series, it doesn’t have the same characters or lore as the original. Left 4 Dead: The Last Stand, on the other hand, was created by the community update team and even endorsed by Valve, which is the closest to a new Left 4 Dead. A Left 4 Dead 2 remaster (with the previous DLC) would be incredibly fun for any fan of the series or even fans of shooter games in general. Unfortunately, it is probably not in the cards.

6F.E.A.R.

First Encounter Assault Recon, aka F.E.A.R., was a psychological horror game that was also a first-person shooter. The game combined horror elements and supernatural entities with futuristic gunplay and militaristic combat. As a result, the unique premise was well-received by critics and players alike.

F.E.A.R. feels like you’re viewing a blend of a horror movie and a fast-paced action film at the same time. Utilizing reflex time, twisted horror elements, and cunning AI for enemies, F.E.A.R. is a unique and haunting experience. The game was released in 2005 and had multiple sequels, but hasn’t received any fanfare since 2011. It has more than earned another opportunity to be remastered and replayed.

5Condemned: Criminal Origin

It could be argued that Condemned: Criminal Origin is a thriller, not a horror game. However, the game has tons of horrific elements that say otherwise. The dark, gritty atmosphere, violence, gore, and unnerving storyline create a haunting escape from reality.

Condemned: Criminal Origin boasts a violent and grim world that is incredibly immersive. The suspenseful storylinealigns well with the hard-hitting and violent combat system, as well as the grimy and dark aesthetic. If the game is ever remastered and polished for new consoles, it could easily become a bigger hit than ever before.

F.E.A.R. Dual Pistols Bulletime

A departure from the dark and depressing realm of psychological and supernatural horror, Dead Rising is a fun and adventurous game following the exploits of photojournalist Frank West. In a Dawn of the Dead-esque plot, Frank seeks the cause of a zombie apocalypse while beingtrapped in a mallwith a variety of survivors. From zombie hordes to psychopaths to innocent civilians, Frank must deal with them all while hunting for the truth.

Frank has appeared in multiple different games after Dead Rising, such as theMarvel vs Capcomfighting games. Dead Rising has received sequels and recreations, but even those stopped after 2016. A new remastered Dead Rising for the next generation could be a perfect contrast to the darker and more mature additions on this list.

3Dino Crisis

It’s honestly a bit of a surprise that Dino Crisis hasn’t been brought back to the modern world. Futuristic covert ops agents arrive on an island to take down a corrupt scientist, but soon, they are hunted by dinosaurs that roam the land. The appeal of the survival horror adventure is pretty easy to see.

The spiritual successor of the fantasticResident Evilseries, Dino Crisis is a visceral and anxious journey, one that allows dinosaurs to feel like dangerous, horrific, andantagonistic forces of nature. Fans have clamored for a Dino Crisis return for years at this point, hoping for a potential sequel or remaster of one of the past games. A future remake has been discussed for ages, but a remaster of the original classic would be a welcome gift to players.

2Silent Hill Trilogy

TheSilent Hillsaga seems to be in full swing once again, returning to the mainstream with a bang. The reveals of Silent Hill Ascension, Silent Hill f, a Silent Hill 2 remake, and the film ‘Return to Silent Hill’ all have been announced in a short amount of time. However, that doesn’t mean the original games shouldn’t be brought into the hands of a new generation.

Silent Hill 1 never got a remaster in the first place. Meanwhile, in 2012, Silent Hill 2 and 3 was remastered as a collection, but with new voice acting and a different graphical style. Instead, a remastered trilogy could be exactly what the world needs before something new. It’d be perfect to replay the original trilogy right before the release of the Silent Hill 2 remake, allowing players to connect with the past while embracing the future.

1Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

A haunting, suspenseful, Lovecraftian cult classic, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem followsterrifying and powerful creatures, mythological entities, and traumas that last lifetimes. Eternal Darkness is a horrific collection of tales, all surrounding the themes of insanity, fear, and death. The game’s impactful lore and sense of mystery are still seen as some of the best in gaming and are considered to be a triumph in horror storytelling.

Aside from narrative elements, like the multiple unique characters, Eternal Darkness boasts an array of fantastic gameplay elements that are still fantastic to see. The horrific yet imaginative ‘sanity effects’ alone can be considered reasons worth revisiting the tale. As a result, the complete package is a fantastic experience just waiting for a remaster.
