RPGs and boss battles go hand in hand, andSea of Starshas its share of baddies, both tough and easy, to stand in your way of saving the planet. Most boss battles in the game are small fry, those you can blow a gust of wind at, and they’ll lose, which is fine.

Then, there are those boss battles that are not only tactically taxing but emotionally exhausting as well, where friends turn into foes and foes, well, they just remain foes. The best fights in the game are the ones that excel at making you feel everything your characters are feeling, pain and all. So, why not check out the fights that were amazing and emotional below?

There will be spoilers below.

8Leaf Monster

There are several Easter eggs and secrets for those who have playedThe Messengerall over Sea of Stars, and this leafy boy is no exception. In the first game, he was an easy boss who attacked you using the very leaves off his body, creating a somewhat disturbing of a naked tree man throwing leaves at you.

The Leaf Monster returns for the first time in the prequel, but instead of attacking you on sight, he hides and waits for you to solve a puzzle before showing his true colors. The fight here is tougher, but it’s worth it to fight and beat him once again.

7Dweller Of Strife

The Dweller of Strife’s reputation has you wholly on edge for the first large chunk of the game. Your teacher tells you that it is a beast of great pain that’s caused the death of at least a dozen other Solstice Warriors that came before you. Awakening destroyed the nearby port town of Garth. Everything you’ve been doing to get prepared to face this monstrosity has led to this point.

When he’s finally revealed…he’s just a large one-eyed monster, similar to those you would find inFinal Fantasygames. The fight is great but cut entirely too shortafter such a huge build-up — you get to fight a copy of his final form in The Messenger though, which is nice.

6Romaya

There is a tale of three sisters: one who became a hero of the people but lost her life. The middle sister chose safety in seclusion. The third sister is the one you meet when you need to retrieve a soul stone to save your friend. She revels in experimentationwith a focus on reanimating corpses to do her bidding.

On sight, she sees you and your party members as recruits for her rank-and-file zombie hoard, and even during battle, she’ll summon on the spot. After her defeat, you find that she’s fairly bratty and vows to exact her revenge on you. It is a creative fight that can go as easy or as difficult as you make it.

5Dweller Of Dread

Not only does this giant calamari-in-waiting make you have to traversedeep into the waters of the Infinite Abyss, where you’ll have no air to breathe (which is fine, due to magic), but he has the nerve to have three total phases while most other bosses, including those near the end of the game, will only have two.

He doesn’t show all of himself at first, thinking just swinging his tentacles will end the Solstice Warriors easily. Once you show him that you aren’t fooling around, he’ll reveal himself a little more, while playing mind games against you and making it seem like you’re attacking Zale instead. He is a master manipulator of the mind, be careful.

4Bulgaves And Erlina

This fight, on a technical level, isn’t much harder than some of the minor bosses you’ve fought already. They are your size, and though stronger than you, aren’t infallible to your Solar and Lunar magic. Hell, this is probably the easiest of trials you will have on your journey to stop the Fleshmancer’s machinations.

What makes this fight hard is the story. Valere and Zale have looked up to the former Solstice Warriors for their entire lives. To have all those feelings tossed aside, to have to take up arms against your former mentors and friends is a great tragedy. It’s an emotional battle of wills and philosophies that everyone loses. Doubly so when you finally see what happens to one of them later on.

3Dweller Of Woe

Other Dwellers and bosses are more fun or impactful than the Dweller of Woe as your first major foe after becoming a Solstice Warrior. She doesn’t look like much at first, being a haunting ghost woman inside a stereotypical haunted mansion will do that, but once the power of the eclipse overtakes her, her true form comes into play.

This fight is special, due to being able to team up with all three of your mentors as you combine the powers of the sun and moon to take it down. Even the best boy Garl gets a chance to shine as you temporarily gain control of him in the middle of a fight. It’s an exciting introduction to fighting the various Dwellers you come across.

2Elysan’darëlle

When you are on the journey for power absolute, you’re bound to be asking for trouble. Erlina, above all else, wished to break out of her supposed destiny and once again have the free will to choose what to do with her life. So, in desperation, she chose the path of ruin.

So, for the final time, you’ll have to face off against the former Erlina, devoid of everything that once made her herself. She no longer knows you, only knows that you, as a Solstice Warrior, must be eliminated. Having the eclipse that the traitors created makes it a fitting setting for a final standoff between former friends.

1The World Eater

The World Eater is coming from the deep void of space for one thing: your planet. Valere and Zale, now with their learning complete, have come into their own and ascended into Guardian Gods. So what is this final battle, is it like all the other fights before? Nope, the turn-based combat is thrown out the window.

Instead, the World Eater is throwing everything it can at you with no stopping, making the encountera straight-up bullet hell. If you’re the type who isn’t good at those types of games, well you’re going to have a rough time, buddy. The World Eater is relentless and will not let two beams of light stop it from getting what it wants.
