Like any RPG worth its salt,Sea of Starshas a party of playable characters that are eminently memorable thanks to their personalities, role in the story, and combat prowess. Each of the six main playable party members in this game stands out for their strengths as both fighters and characters and contributes a lot to the enjoyment of this adventure.

From predestined children of the Solstice to assassins who have disguised themselves as pirates, there is plenty to love about each playable character from Sea of Stars. Some characters do shine slightly brighter than others, however, depending on how useful they are in battle and how much of a lasting impression they leave once the journey is complete.
Warning: Contains major story and gameplay spoilers for Sea of Stars.

6Garl: Warrior Cook
Everyone needs a friend like Garl. Despite living his entire life in the shadow of Zale and Valere, Garl’s dedication to his friends never wavers, and his genuine compassion forms the beating heart that guides many of the party’s decisions throughout the game.
In battle, Garl lacks the magical stats that other characters possess, but that doesn’t mean he is useless. His strong attack and defense stats mean he can more than hold his own in battle, and his Nourish skill is certainly handy when things are looking dire. Besides, without Garl, who would cook all those delicious meals around the campfire?

5B’st: Living Glass Golem
The loveable B’st is the final character to join your party in Sea of Stars, but that doesn’t make them any less important to the makeup of your team. Sporting perhaps the most unique design out of all the main characters, B’st’s otherworldly personality makes them exciting to the crew.

In battle, B’st doesn’t use any weaponry, instead preferring to use their pair fists to beat up foes. They do possess Arcane magic, but their high physical attack stats make them a dominant force against enemies that are weak to blunt force damage. Powerful, impactful, and very pink, B’st is one character who is always difficult to leave out of your party once they join.
4Resh’an: Immortal Alchemist
Resh’an may only be a temporary member of your party, but their presence in both the story and combat ensures they make the most of their limited time in Sea of Stars. As far as mage characters in RPGs go, Resh’an has a lot going for him, as his Arcane skills pack a real punch and can quickly wipe out foes that are susceptible to magic damage.

But it’s Resh’an’s involvement in the story that leaves an impression. Without going into too much detail, Resh’an impacts both the past and current events of Sea of Stars, creating ripples that are felt by nearly all the other characters and the world around them. Even if he isn’t in Sea of Stars for that long, this Immortal Alchemist leaves his mark.
3Serai: Portal Assassin
Serai is the super cool, dagger-wielding, portal-jumping, seafaring pirate captain/backstabbing assassin who always has one more secret up their sleeve. Serai contributes to some major story beats in Sea of Stars, and as the adventure progresses, you discover her hard exterior isn’t as rock solid as you may have initially thought. However, where Serai shines is in combat.
Venom Flurry may be the single most satisfying Skill to pull off in the entire game, as consistently timing your button presses to Serai’s jumps is just as rewarding the hundredth time you pull it off as the first. Any of her attacks that make use of portals is guaranteed to be a hit, even if the enemies can’t see it coming. Disorient can also be extremely useful when you find yourself in a tight spot as it sets back an enemy from performing their move, potentially saving your party some precious turns to recover, regroup, and re-engage.

2Zale: Solar Blade Dancer
Out of the Solstice twins, Zale was gifted the powers of the sun which he uses to light the way forward in both exploration and battles. Zale prefers quick, direct physical attacks, mixed in with powerful solar offensive skills, and the ability to provide some healing aid to his party. All of this combines to make him one of the most well-rounded playable characters in Sea of Stars and one who is hard to justify leaving out of your party at any point during the game.

And as fun as it is to perform a Sunball or Dash Strike skill, Zale is just as interesting as a character as he is a fighter. One of the central themes of the game’s story is destiny versus choice, and Zale’s arc deals with this conflict in interesting and surprising ways. As one of the two main protagonists of the game, Zale is more than worthy.
1Valere: Lunar Monk
And yet, the most exciting playable character in Sea of Stars goes to Zale’s lunar-loving counterpart, Valere. Her journey to discover her destiny alongside Zale has all the hallmarks of a great RPG story and her bottomless determination is continually admirable throughout the entire game. In battle, Valere has some of the most deliciously intriguing Skills to pull off.
And while Lunar Shield is a great defensive ability and Crescent Arc is perfect for spreading damage across grouped-together enemies, her most satisfying Skill is Moonerang. In essence, Moonerang can go on forever or, at least, for as long as you can keep up the increasingly more challenging timed button presses. Versatile in combat and endearing as a character, Valere is the true star (or moon?) of Sea of Stars.
