It doesn’t take long for you to realize how important stat management is going to be in JRPG-style games likeSea Of Stars. You’re almost always in the company of two or more characters so from the start, you’re planning and strategizing with a party of characters.
Since you’ll only ever have three at max in combat, your characters need to be balanced, so they can be swapped in with a minimal amount of risk. For the most part, each character is built to fill multiple roles which means that the more specific ones are left for you to decide based on how you distribute stat points.

Updated July 23, 2025, by Sean Murray:If you’re wondering where to put those bonus stats, this Sea of Stars level up guide is here to help. We’ve refreshed this guide’s formatting to add more breakout tips and also give it some useful links to other Sea of Stars topics.
Sea Of Stars Level-Up System
In the name of convenience, your characters share one overall experience bar. When that gets filled, every character gets to level up at the same timeto ensure that nobody gets left behind.
When they do, every character gets additional points attributed to each of the following stats:Physical Attack, Physical Defense, Magic Attack, Magic Defense, Health Points, and Mana Points(although this last one doesn’t always get a boost).

Then you get the chance to pickone of four stats to give bonus points to,which can affect how the character evolves in terms of a specific role.
Best Stats For Each Character On Level-Up
As you get to know each character’s skills, base stats, and behaviors, you’ll get a sense of where you should focus their power. Here are someguidelines for each characterto get you started.
Valere - Magic Attack and Magic Defense
Due to her being abattle monk, Valereis arguably themost balanced characterin the game. She’s able to hit hard, take a decent amount of damage, and has a healthy amount of health and mana to support her as a consistent party member.
She also has what may be the most devastating attack in the Moonerangsince it can hit groups of enemies no matter their positions for huge amounts of damage if you get the timing right.

However, to take full advantage of Valere’s power, you should buff her Magic Attack and Magic Defense as much as possible. This will bring out the most in the Moonerang and allow her to tank some of the more powerful magical attacks and enemies that will become more common the more you play.
Zale - Magic Attack and Physical Attack
AlthoughZalemay look like he’s built as a rogue being ablade dancer,he’s all aboutgoing on offense.
Early on, he can fill asupport rolewith his Healing Light ability, but as the game progresses,he becomes one of the highest damage dealers in the game.

His blade attacks are strong, andmany enemies are super vulnerable to his Sunballskill.
That being said, you shouldput the bonus points in boosting Zale’s offensive capabilities through Magic Attack and Physical Attack. He’s a good partner to Valere for a reason, being able to capitalize on moments when enemies are most vulnerable.

Garl - Physical Attack and Physical Defense
The lovable childhood friendGarl joins as a warrior cook, and he certainly lives up to that title. Not only is hephysically strong, but he also has theNourish skillthat can heal a lot of damage. His Hurl skill is also very useful for positioningto make enemy groups easier to target with skills like Zale’s Sunball.
He can serve as anatural tankfor a large part of the game, but since he has no elemental bonuses, you shouldfocus on improving his physical abilities. He has limited range when it comes to offensive magic, so you shouldboost his Physical Attack and Physical Defenseto compensate.

This will make himhit as hard as a truckwhile resisting getting hit himself, while hishigh health pointswill have him covered against magic attacks.
Seraï - Mana Points and Health Points
As a mysterious assassin,Seraï joins the group quite suddenly but proves her skills and value almost instantly. The more you have her in combat, the more you realize that she’ll be making frequent appearances.
This is because of her two most useful skills:Venom Flurry and Disorient. The former works similarly to Moonerang in that it can hit all enemies anywhere for as much damage as you’re able to keep it going.

The latter is anextremely important skillthat is able todelay enemy actions up to several turnswith good timing whilealso doing Blunt and Venom damage.
The problem is that since Seraï will be popping in and out, she’s not the bulkiest character. Her physical stats grow steadily, but you shouldgive her bigger Health Point and Mana Point stats to support this growth. It will make her even more versatile and allow her to stay in battle longer.

Resh’an - Physical Defense and Magic Defense
As an experienced and powerful alchemist,Resh’an joins the party in a support capacity. His skills are tailored to change the battlefield byusing Abeyance to bring all enemies to a single point and Ebb to remove one to two random lockson special enemy attacks.
He also has both hisPetrichorskillandUltimate attackto providestrong party healing.
With this in mind, Resh’an is not a good offensive character, pretty much in any sense. His basic attack doesn’t even hit for arcane damage; despite that being his element, it hits for venom. To make him a more useful support character, pour the bonus points into his Physical Defense and Magic Defense.
With his decent health point score, Resh’an will be able toendure punishment while focusing on helping the team.
B’st - Mana Points and Physical Attack
As the last character to join the team,B’st can be tricky to work into your partyarrangement, but his stats make him clearly suited to the take on thetankrole. He has high health points, high defense, and high magic defenseto ensure that he can endure even the strongest attacks.
Hisskillsare justvariants of physical attackswhich essentially nullify his Magic Attack stat.
On that note, you should give bonus points to his Mana Points and Physical Attack. This will give him more options in battle and will give him some of the highest damage output that’s possible in the whole game.
