Quick Links
When players begin character creation inBaldur’s Gate 3, they have a choice between several origin characters or to make a custom one. Among the origin choices, one stands out: the Dark Urge, an amnesiac with a dark past.
While intriguing, it is recommended that players looking to make their own character avoid the Dark Urge as their first playthrough, since it doesn’t work as a blank slate like a custom character would. The Dark Urge comes with its own set of plot lines and twists, and even if you’ve beaten the game before, there are several surprises waiting for you down this dark path.

Major Spoiler Warning!
Who Is The Dark Urge?
The Dark Urge is a Bhaalspawn, a being fathered by the Lord of Murder, Bhaal. Much like in the original games, Bhaal sends his spawn to create chaos, each spawn proving themselves by murdering not only countless people but also other spawns.
In Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, the main character is themselves a Bhaalspawn

Ember Gortash had the Dark Urge as his original ally, making them sow chaos on the streets of Baldur’s Gate through planned murders. This made the power structure of the city uneasy and in need of a savior; that would be the role of Gortash.
Butthe Dark Urge was ultimately slain by Orin, a different Bhaalspawn looking to prove her worth to her god. Gortash was able to ultimately continue his plans with Orin, even if she proved less predictable than the Dark Urge.

Is The Dark Urge Evil?
Before the game starts, the Dark Urge is definitely evil. They murdered countless people and gained great pleasure from it, so you’re able to imagine them being not too different from Orin herself. Yetif you choose to start the game as the Dark Urge, the choice is yours.
You’ll still end up forced to be part of some evil scenarios, but you can fight the urge to kill and turn your character into a better person. In the end, it’s no different from playing other origin characters; you can play a Shadowheart who hates Shar or a Lae’zel that cares little for her people.
Who Is Sceleritas Fel?
After some time playing as the Dark Urge, you’ll likely encounter Sceleritas Fel, a goblin-like creature that claims to be your butler. He can even reward you when performing evil deeds, and seems to know quite a lot about your true nature, even if he’s reluctant to share it.
While what he is can feel like a complete mystery, it’s actually rather simple:He’s a being created by Bhaal to serve you. Not all Bhaalspawn have butlers, but the ones that have a purpose for Bhaal do. Once that purpose is complete, the butler dies.
