Red Dead Redemptionhas remained a fan favourite over the years and is still one of the few games to explore an open-world wild west. This truly excellent cowboy adventure charts the later years of John Marston, a lifelong criminal hunting down old friends in hopes of saving himslef and his family from the law. Players were given the opportunity to explore dusty saloons and newly developed cities, as they lived out the final enchanting years of the western.

Over a decade on and remasters have become a staple of the gaming industry, allowing once original and beloved games to find new life on new consoles. Despite how excellent the game remains, there are definitely features that players have grown used to missing and that must be added in a potential remaster.

8More Exciting Outfit Choices

While Red Dead Redemption does have a selection of premade outfits for John Marston to wear, it’s nowhere near as comprehensive as the options in the sequel or even The Grand Theft Auto games of the time.

In a remaster Rockstar needs to provide more personalisation choices for players, letting us make John look as we want to play; whether as a dark psychopath or a well-dressed gent.

7Complex Open-World Heists

The stereotypical Wild West portrayed in Red Dead Redemption encompasses heists, from holding up trains to attacking unfortunate travellers. It allowed players to break into banks across the world, but there wasn’t much variety in the approaches or targets.

The sequel took one step forward and one back, offering different targets with random NPCs and trains but removing the chance to rob banks. In a remaster we need a mix of both, with opportunities to plan and execute the perfect heists on trains, banks or stagecoaches.

6Expanding Upon The Van Der Linde Gang

The first game shows us three members of John Marston’s old gang, but through the sequel, we got to learn much more about John’s old found family.

Many of these characters had their stories tragically ended, but some still exist in the world during the period of the first game. A remaster could offer a perfect opportunity to revisit some of these characters, as John (and maybe even Jack) reunite with Sadie, Charles and Person to see how their lives ended up going without the influence of Dutch.

5Jack Marston Epilogue

Jack is not as interesting as his father, however, his story does have potential. Unfortunately, his quests in the endgame of the original only show a small sequence of events as he hunts down John’s murderer, leaving a lot to the imagination about his future and who he became.

Admittedly, this narrative could become a third game, but it would also work well as an additional epilogue sequence in a remaster. Just like the second game, spending more time in the years following the death of the protagonist would help players see the effects of the main game, while allowing Jack to develop into a more interesting character separate from his father.

4Blackwater Mystery Solved

One of the few hanging questions from Red Dead Redemption 2 is what exactly happened in Blackwater. We know there was a heist on a boat that went wrong, Dutch killed an innocent woman and the cash was stored away somewhere.

This was obviously envisioned after the story of Red Dead Redemption, so when the player is taken back to Blackwater through the game’s story there may be a perfect opportunity to answer some lingering questions, with an interesting side quest that revolves around John reconciling with one of his past mistakes and finding the treasure they were never able to secure.

3An Effective Online Mode

Red Dead Redemption 2 Online missed the mark for most. While galloping around with friends had its moments, overall the adventure felt lacking in substance and with far too many paywalls to make it an enjoyable experience. Some players were able to make their mark in thsi with epic role-playing servers, but most felt dissapointed in the final project.

A remaster has the potential to fix this problem, by adding new stories and filling the world with interesting missions for players to really dig their teeth into. If GTA online is anything to go off, we could see a trulywildwest, with mythological horses, powerful weaponry and endless opportunities to have fun with friends.

2No More Herding

Red Dead Redemption included a detailed and frankly tedious herding mechanic, introduced when John is required to help his savior Bonnie MacFarlane. It may help with role-playing and is undoubtedly era-appropriate, but virtually no one enjoyed these sometimes essential quests.

The tale of redemption that legendary outlaw John Marston is taking on does not need to be bogged down with him herding a few cattle; it can destroy the pace and feel infuriatingly difficult. To help Bonnie, Marston could take on activities much more appropriate for his skills, such as hunting predators or serving as a bodyguard on trade convoys.

1Making Grand Theft Auto Canon

Connections between both the GTA and Red Dead franchises have been shown for a while; whether directly through books in Michael De Santa’s house in GTA 5 or indirectly by the inclusion of similar alien conspiracies and dark witchcraft mythology.

Whatever the case it’s almost certainly time Rockstar take a stand on this matter, maybe including a descendant of CJ’s in the remaster or crafting some connection to the upcoming GTA 6. Fans would love to finally see it defined, and it could help build hype for the rest of both series.
