An impressiveSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatemod from mastaklo might be the closest thing we ever get toDragon Ball’s Goku ever joining the game.
Despite being one of the most-requested characters to join the game (well, aside from joke choices like Shrek), it’s very unlikely that Goku will ever be added to Super Smash Bros. officially. Sure, he’s been in tons of games and is a worldwide icon with tons of moveset potential, but including a character so synonymous with anime and manga would be a big departure from the rest of the roster and open the floodgates perhaps a littletoowide for anyone to join the game.
Combine that with the fact that it looks like we’re not getting a newSmashgame for a long while, and Goku joining the series is a bit of a pipe dream, which saddens me to say as a big fan of everything Kamehameha. Still, it looks like we won’t be needingNintendoto officially add Goku to the game, as this incredible work-in-progress mod from mastaklo feels as close to an official inclusion as we’re ever going to get.
As showcased by mastaklo on their YouTube page, the mod, which can be downloaded in beta form via mastaklo’s Patreon, replaces (but not overwrites) Ryu with everyone’s favourite turtle school student, Goku. Not only that, but Goku also has his own unique moveset that pitch perfectly represents the character without just giving him a bunch of beam attacks and overpowered transformations.
For his basic attacks, Goku has a bunch of recognisable attacks like his two-handed hammer smash and his dive bomb, but it’s his special moves that really impress. Goku’s neutral special is, of course, a Kamehameha, while his up special allows him to use Instant Transmission to teleport around the map in short bursts. His side special lets him tap into Kaioken for a dash attack, while his down special, which is by far my favourite of the bunch, lets him use Solar Flare to blind his enemies briefly.
If you’re wondering where Goku’s transformations are, that’s where his taunts come in. By pressing up on the d-pad, Goku can cycle between his Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Blue, Ultra Instinct, and Mastered Ultra Instinct forms at will, which doesn’t have an effect on combat but does give some representation to an iconic part of his moveset. Not only that, but the most recent update to the mod adds battle damage to his costumes depending on how many hits he takes.
Combine that with unique hair physics and a bunch of animations pulled straight from his movesets across the manga, anime, and games, and this is the most comprehensive Goku mod for Super Smash Bros. that I’ve ever seen, and about as good as it’s likely ever going to get. If you were one of the hundreds of thousands of fans voting for Goku in the Smash Ballot, it’s worth checking out for a glimpse into a parallel universe where Goku ever makes it in.
