Bloomberg held an interview with Phil Spencer and Todd Howard following the full launch ofStarfieldin which he asked about the complaints of poor PC optimisation, but all Howard had to say was that you probably just need better hardware.
“I asked our audience, what would you ask Todd?” co-host Ed Ludlow said. “Big question for many, ‘Why did you not optimise this game for PC?'”

“We did, it’s running great,” Todd Howard said while Phil Spencer laughed. “It’s a next-gen PC game, we really do push the technology. So, you may need to upgrade your PC for this game, but it’s got a lot of great stuff going on in it, and the fans are responding awesome.”
Players have been sharing mixed reports about Starfield’s PC performance sinceit launched in early access- some claim to have no problems and steady fps on top-of-the-line hardware, particularly the RTX 4090 and 7900 xt, while others claim to have constant stuttering and crashes. One thread on the subreddit asked, “Why is PC performance so bad?”, garnering over 100 upvotes.
“Yeah, 5900x and a 3090 and it’s running like hot farts anywhere outside,” Juts replied. “Interiors are mostly fine except for the starting caves so far. Feels like a worse version of what Remnant did with their ‘designed to use DLSS’ release. Having to lower render resolution and use upsampling to even get close to 60fps in bonkers.”
“3090ti Ryzen 7800 X3D 128 GB RAM DDR5 5600 and this game runs like complete shit on any [settings] except 1080p low FSR2,” Routine-Stress7379 said. “In 1440p it dips below 20fps, 4k it just crashes”.
Starfield doesn’t have DLSS due to Bethesda’s partnership with AMD, instead opting to use FSR2. For context, DLSS isa technology modern Nvidia cards use to upscale resolutionso you’re able to play in 4k or 1440p without worse performance. Of course, modders were quick to patch in DLSS, replacing FSR2, which many suggest downloading for the best experience on PC. You need an RTX card for it to work, however.
Not everyone has had problems, though. A thread simply saying,“So frustrated with [the] PC port"on the Starfield subreddit was mostly met with anecdotes of positive experiences.
“That’s really strange, I’ve got a 4070ti on the latest driver and haven’t had any sort of crashes or bugs of that nature,” CriticalMammal said.
“Really weird since I’m using a 4070 and having no problems,” TestItCall said.
That being said, plenty hope Starfield gets official DLSS support in future, as well as more graphical options to find the sweet spot for performance.
