What Are Eikons?

In Final Fantasy 16, Eikons are the Summons that Final Fantasy fans have experienced throughout the series butare controlled by actual hosts. The people of Valistheafear and worshipthese god-like beings as they are used by the various kingdoms as instruments of war.

The term “Eikon” is derived from the Ancient Greek word for “image” and is an alternate version of the word “icon.”

Ifrit is awakened at Phoenix Gate

Eight Eikons exist in Valisthea: Ifrit, Phoenix, Shiva, Titan, Garuda, Ramuh, Bahamut, and Odin. Each of the Eikons represents an element, such as wind or lightning; however, there aretwo Eikons of fire and no Eikons of water. Phoenix and Ifrit are both the Eikons of Fire, while Leviathan, the Eikon of water, disappeared several years ago, and their location is unknown.

Eikons are composed ofAether, the life force of Valisthea and theorigin of magic in Final Fantasy 16. The presence of Aether istypically invisible,but mass quantities of it will give off ablue fogin the environment. Eikons can heal themselves byabsorbing more Aetherand even have the potential to regenerate any lost limbs.

Dominants

The individuals who are bestowed with the power of Eikons are known asDominants. Throughout Valisthea, Dominants are either praised and treated like royalty or shackled and controlled like slaves. When a Dominant summons the power of their Eikon, the beingtowers over regular humansand can decimate armies within an instant.

The more Dominants use their Eikon abilities, the faster their life force is drained by the Aether.

Bahamut and Odin fighting

The Rosfield royal family is known to harness the power of the Phoenix, though the eldest son, Clive, did not receive this blessing. Instead, it was inherited by his younger brother, Joshua. However, during theassassination attempt at Phoenix Gate, Clive awakened a second Eikon of fire, Ifrit.

Although each Dominant controls their specific Eikon, Clive possesses the ability toabsorb other Eikons and use multiple elemental powers. By absorbing the Eikon, he strips the incumbent Dominant of their Eikon power, and they’re left mostly powerless.
