Despite the best efforts of CEOs who would rather fire vast swathes of their workforce than take an imperceptible pay cut, 2023 has seen the release ofmany very good video games. The long-term future of the medium may look grimas corporations hollow out the industry that has produced the games we love, but in the short-term, a lot of good video games are coming out. So that’s nice.

If you couldn’t tell, I feel more than a little conflicted about the current state of the art and industry. Will 2023 be the last great year of the medium as bosses attempt to sell off everything that isn’t nailed down? Maybe! But in the meantime, it’s undeniable that, whatever kind of games you like, 2023 has had something for you, and October is the year’s most packed month yet.

Miles Morales firing a web towards the camera in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

This month alone will see the release of:

That’s a lot! And it isn’t even everything. There are a few re-releases that are almost as exciting as the brand new games. The first threeMetal Gear Solidgames are hitting modern consoles and PC with Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 on the 24th. The Sega Genesis Gargoyles game is getting a remastered release for modern systems on the 19th. And The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope andBorderlands 3are getting Switch ports on the 5th and 6th, respectively.

I’ve been in the mood for Marvel’sSpider-Man 2, as Insomniac’s webhead games feel like perfect autumn mood setters. ButSuper Mario Bros. Wondermight be the most exciting game on the board, given that it’s the first new 2D game starring the world’s most popular plumber in a decade, and the team behind it was given no deadline for when it needed to be completed. It seems incredibly likely that it’s a certified heater.

Alan Wake 2is one that I’m more cautiously excited for, as I didn’t jive with what I played of the first game. But, after watching my colleague Eric Switzer’svideo preview, it looks too cool to pass up. There are others that I plan to make time for, likeSonic SuperstarsandAssassin’s Creed Mirage. But Mario, Spider-Man, and Alan Wake will likely get most of my attention.

But, what about you, readerconsumer? Whatgamescontent are you most excited to buy in this busiest of months forthe wonderful medium you adoreproduct launches?
