As a puzzle game,Cocoonis fantastic, if a bit mind bendy. The mechanics are easy enough to grasp, the complicated part is wrapping your head around the concept of the different worlds, and the orbs that represent them.

Now, if the puzzles could get conceptually confusing, the story even more so. The game does very little to explicitly explain what’s going on, leaving it all to interpretation or for players to find clues. While there’s no clear answer, everything seems to be pointing at one single theme.

Cocoon character passing through their four orbs

Spoiler Warning!

The Story Of Cocoon

You take control of a bug-like creature, whose abilities include picking up objects and activating buttons. As you explore a mostly arid area, you find an artifact that rockets you upwards towards the sky.You pop out of an orange orb, which you can now carry around.

The zone you were just in is inside the orb, and there are four orbs in total for you to find. Each is being held by a sort of guardian that once found retreat inside their respective orbs. You’ll face them in puzzle combat, but they won’t harm you, they just kick you out of their orb.

While it might seem like a convenient game mechanic (there’s no health bars after all), it follows the theme ofit all being a test. This is far clearer on the final and biggest of the guardians, who you need to activate by collecting all the orbs.

Each time you defeat one of the final guardian’s phases, it gives back one of the orbs; this clearly hurts it, particularly the final orb. It could squash you without issue, butit isn’t your enemy, acting more like a proud teacher passing down the torch.

The Ending Of Cocoon

The final scene has you evolve into a bigger creature, being propelled upwards one final time. The final zone you were on wasa sun of sorts, and the four orbs you were using in your adventure become planets orbiting it.

These orbs, much like your character, evolved to become planets. This was the whole point of not only the game, but all the structures and technologies that you find in your journey. It was all made so someone could eventually rise above them all, and who knows how many times the cycle went on until someone finally passed.

The Secret Ending

There’s one final scene you’re able to unlock in the game, althoughit’s more of a sequel hook than an insight of the story. You’ll see your character in the distance being approached by other beings that went through similar tests; you can tell by the complexity of the orbs they’re carrying.

That in itself doesn’t add much to what’s going on; it doesn’t add new details or contradict anything we’ve seen. It’s likely that it’s aiming towards a possible Cocoon 2, where you’ll have to deal with systems of orbs rather than single ones.
