Summary
When you are finished crafting your character inStarfield’s character creator, you will have to choose a background. Backgrounds determine your initial loadout and skill stats. NPCs in the game will also recognize your background and react to what makes you, you.

Starter equipment is important. With the right background, you can have an easier time traversing planets at the beginning of the game or be able to carry heavier weapons. There are over 20 different backgrounds to choose from when you are creating your character, but which ones will give you the upper hand at the beginning of the game?
7Cyber Runner
If your type of playstyle is stealth-kills and stealing from people’s pockets, then Cyber Runner is a must-pick for you. Cyber Runner is the path to take for those who want the ability to sneak through areas you should not be.
You cannot use stealth unless you unlock the Physical Skill to do so, so Cyber Runner gives you a head start. When upgrading this skill, you can become 25/50/75 percent less likely to be noticed. The Security skill allows you tohack complex locks, and the Theft skill unlocks the ability to pickpocket from NPCs. Instead of waiting to unlock these perks, you can start with these abilities.

6Cyberneticist
Cyberneticist is a more hands-on idea of a cyber-citizen, and instead of being proficient in sneaking and stealing, you will have proficiencies in dealing special damage and staying alive. This background is well-rounded as you get Medicine, which increases the effects of Med Packs, and Lasers, which increase the damage of laser weapons.
The increase in laser damage is by 10/20/30 percent and Med Packs will heal for 10/20/30/50 percent more, so hacking, damaging, and healing are all you need to get by. The Security perk allows you to hack Advanced/Expert/Master locks as well as increase the number of auto attempts you have by 2/3/4. The Cyberneticist prioritizes some skills that you may not realize are useful early on, such as hacking locks.

5Bounty Hunter
Starfield is a game about exploration. You will be spending most of your time traveling via your spaceship and traversing the unknown territory of planets. Other than social skills and combat skills, traversal skills will be very useful.
The Bounty Hunter background allows you to travel better. Piloting unlocks ship upgrades such as increased thrusters and maneuverability. Targeting Control Systems allows you to upgrade your ship attacks by increasing critical hit chance and survivability. Lastly, Boost Pack Training unlocks jetpacks early on in the game.

4Diplomat
If you aren’t interested in increasing your combat effectiveness, you are probably more interested in the story side of things and interacting with characters. In that case, the Diplomat background is the best option, as it focuses on Social skills so that you may talk your way through anything, which includes persuading in dialogue or bartering for better prices with a trader.

Persuasion increases your chance of success in convincing by 10/20/30 percent, and Commerce lowers the price of items for 5/10/15/20 percent less as well as increasing how much you’re able to sell your items for. To make up for the lack of combat effectiveness this background starts with, you get the Wellness perk which increases some of that total HP by 10/20/30.
3Gangster
This isa Combat Skill-heavy background. Shotgun Certification increases the damage of shotguns by 10/20/30 percent. The Gangster background is designed to be a heavy hitter, so there is no time for sweet-talking with this origin background. As a Gangster, you may simply take what you want from others by any means necessary.
Theft allows you to pickpocket, which you otherwise have to work to unlock. Boxing increases Unarmed damage by 25/50/75 percent as well, decreasing how much O2 is used while performing these attacks. With the Boxing perk, you use 25/50 percent less O2 when performing heavy attacks. Rank 3 of Boxing makes it so that running uses 30 percent less O2.

2Soldier
Soldier is a great starter background that increases Ballistic damage, your O2 meter, and unlocks the ability to use Boost Packs (also known as jetpacks). Boost Packs allow you to almost fly, reaching great heights while you explore alien planets. As you upgrade through the Boost Packs perks Rank, Boost Packs will use up less fuel and regenerate more fuel at a quicker rate.
Your O2 meter is important and is better understood as a stamina bar. Then the Fitness skill increases how much oxygen is available to you by 10/20/30 percent. And last, Ballistics increases the damage of Ballistic-type weapons by 10/20/30 percent.

1[File Not Found]
This is a strange name for a background origin but is purposeful. File Not Found is your ordinary, well-rounded experience, where you have no clear identity but are proficient in the important things. If you are unsure of what you want to put points into, this background is a good pick.
File Not Found will give you increased health points and increased damage with Ballistic weapons at the start of the game. The Piloting skill is a Tech skill that allows you to unlock ship capabilities like easier maneuvering andwhat types of ships you may pilot.
