There are optional locations to explore inBaldur’s Gate 3that are not mandatory for the progression of the main story. The Whispering Depths is one of these optional areas. You will want to prepare before venturing into the unknown, though, as you may bump into a boss fight or two.
There are multiple ways to enter The Underdarkand one of them happens to be through the Whispering Depths. There is a catch, though, as you won’t be able to enter The Underdark from the depths with ease. This guide will detail every important location in Whispering Depths and how to get through the entire map.
How To Enter The Whispering Depths
To enter the Whispering Depths you must choose the dialogue option toInvestigatethe welllocated at Blighted Village.Investigating requirespassing an Intelligence skill check with a difficulty class of 10.By passing the skill check, you will have the option of climbing down the rope.
Blighted Village is full of goblins. You can either kill the ones blocking your path or convince them that you can walk freely around the village.
The wellis located just near theBlighted Village waypoint.
Whispering Depths Walkthrough
Once you enter, you can walk straight and then take an immediate left into a small cave area. You will not have to fight anything just yet. This area is safe and contains a key item needed to best the Whispering Depths. On the way, you can find skeleton corpses and old backpacks full of gold and trinkets.
you may findSpiderstep Bootsin the Heavy Chest.Spiderstep Boots allow you to walk on web surfaces without becoming Enwebbedand stuck in place. In the Wicker Chest, you can findfour different scrolls.
When Enwebbed,you will not be able to move or attackduring combat. Attack rolls against you have Advantage. You need these boots to survive the battlefield ahead.
This room also has journals around the area explaining that an elf has transformed into a queen spider in order to appease her deity. This is a clue as to what is to come later.
Now, no matter where you step in the rest of the cave you will probably start combat with some Phase Spiders ahead. Don’t bank on fighting them in whatever location they are in asPhase Spiders can teleport at whim. You will need to utilize your movement well in combat because of these teleportation antics.
There is only one set of Spiderstep Boots, so you should choose who wears them wisely. Whoever wears them can stay on high ground and chase down teleporting spiders, while the rest can stay on low ground to decrease the risk of becoming Enwebbed.
BecomingEnwebbed has a Dexterity save.Characters with high Dexterity can risk using high ground and utilizing those webbed bridges.
Your biggest problem when fighting thesetwo Phase Spiders and two Ettercapswill be reaching them.Ranged damage is optimal in Whispering Depths.Most of your team should have good ranged damage.
You may preferyour tank or melee character to be the one with the Spiderstep Bootsin that case.
Being able to teleport yourself will allow you to be equal to your enemy.Misty Stepspell or scroll can allow players to teleportat a whim as well. A scroll can only be used once and the spell can only be used until it consumes all of your Spell Slots, so you won’t be able to teleport as much as the spiders, but enough is better than none.
Whispering Depths Secret Entrances
There are two secret entrances inside Whispering Depths that lead to a cellar within the Blighted Village. The first one can be found by climbing up the Cragged Rock at the beginning of the cave, near where you found the Spiderstep Boots. Head south east and use Jump to access the higher web-surface. Follow the natural path until you find a Cracked Wall that is immune to Slashing. Hit it with something like your bow and arrow to break it.
The other location can be found by heading to the center of the cave and steering off to the right. You can pass aPerception checkat the end of this road to reveal a Cracked Wall you can break down, leading to the same cellar.
Phase Spider Matriarch
Heading further into the Whispering Depths will lead to a boss fight with the Phase Spider Matriarch.We have a guide covering how to best defeat this matriarchand her offspring.In this boss arena, you will be able to find Dark Amethyst which is related to thequest The Necromancy of Thay.
To enter The Underdark from the Whispering Depths, you will need to haveFeather Fall. The huge chasm in this boss room will lead to The Underdark if you may safely jump down using Feather Fall.
