When players first start their journey throughBaldur’s Gate 3, they will shortly encounter Lae’zel, a Githyanki Fighter with a longsword and short temper. While she can be tough to talk to, she’s a great addition to any party, since Fighters are a balanced class that work well with any combination.

Yet her story is full of mysteries, even to her. She has blind faith in the cause of her people, leaving no room for questions, and threatening those who even dare ask them. Since getting information out of her is difficult, even after finishing the game you might be left with more questions than answers.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Lae’zel Holding A Sword

Spoiler Warning!

Who Is Lae’zel?

Lae’zel is a fierce believer in Vlaakith, the Lich Queen of the githyanki. While Vlaakith is not a deity herself, all githyanki revere her as one, being their ultimate goal to ascend and stand by her side in the Astral Plane.

She grew up and trained on a Creche, where young githyanki grow up, train, and study the way of Vlaakith. While the true home of the githyanki is in the Astral Plane, time works differently there, so their young can’t grow up. This is why the Creches are scattered all around the realms, specifically the ones where time flows normally.

Having finished her training,Lae’zel has one final test: to slay a Mind Flayer and take its head as proof, gaining access to the Astral Plane. Should she show great promise, she could even gain the right to ride a Red Dragon, the highest honor only surpassed by being ascended.

The githyanki are able to ride Red Dragons thanks to an ancient agreement done with Tiamat, although no one knows exactly what the deal entails.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Speaking To A Proyection Of Vlaakith

During one of the many raids to Mind Flayer colonies, Lae’zel was captured. This is when you meet her at the beginning of the game, as you both try to escape the Nautiloid. The rest of her group seems to have been slain since none of the githyanki you meet from this point forward know her personally.

Can You Romance Lae’zel?

Yes, and it can either be something really easy or really hard. Lae’zel treats all her beliefs like her worship to Vlaakith: to the extreme. So if you agree with her even slightly, she’ll have her eyes on you. But if you tend to avoid conflict and never heed her advice, she’ll treat you like a waste of space.

The key is to face conflict head-on, engage in most fights, and not shut her down when she has an idea. She’s not inherently evil, so being an overall good character and at the same time having a romance with Lae’zel is entirely possible.

What Is The Truth Behind Vlaakith?

If you never visit the Creche in the mountain pass, you might think that Lae’zel’s ending is a good one. Once the Absolute is defeated, a Red Dragon comes to Lae’zel. This isn’t just a mount for her to ride; it’s an invitation to be ascended, something she’s been dreaming of all her life.

The problem is that ascension is not what most Githyanki think it is.Vlaakith consumes all who “ascend”, extending her own life and getting one step closer to true godhood. The only way to find out about this and save Lae’zel from this fate is to go through the Creche and find out the truth.
