Enchanting Tales

Every pack of Wilds of Eldraine includes a reprint of a popular enchantment from Magic’s history. It directly follows on from March of the Machine’s legendary creatures, the Brothers War’s artifacts, and Strixhaven’s instants and sorceries, giving you enchantments that can spice up the limited environment without entering Standard or Pioneer at the same time.

Universes Within: The Walking Dead

After almost three years, Magic’s finally giving the Walking Dead x Secret Lair cards their own, in-Magic-multiverse reprints. These are not part of the the set itself and are not legal in Standard, but can be found in The List slot in Set boosters.

Much like other Universes Beyond reprints, the Universes Within versions are considered the exact same card for deckbuilding purposes – for instance, you may only have four copies total of Rick, Steadfast Leader and Greymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart in your deck (or only one in Commander).

Greymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart

As Graymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart enters the battlefield, choose two abilities from among first strike, vigilance, and lifelink.

Malik, Grim Manipulator

Two generic, one red, one white, one black legendary creature – Human Rogue – 4/3 – Mythic Rare

When Malik, Grim Manipulator enters the battlefield, you and target opponent each secretly choose a creature that player controls. Then those creatures are revealed, and that player sacrifices those creatures.

Whenever an opponent sacrifices a creature, you create a Treasure token.

Commander Decks

After Commander Masters, Lords of the Rings, and March of the Machine, it feels almost quaint to have just two Commander decks launching alongside Wilds of Eldraine.

This time, we’ve got a white/green deck playing heavily with the new Roles enchantment tokens, and a blue/black deck with one of Magic’s most underrated creature types, Faeries.

Virtue And Valor

The first deck is Virtue and Valor. It relies mostly on the new Roles enchantment tokens, fitting it into a go-wide token deck that rewards you for enchanting lots of creatures and swinging in with a potentially massive amount of card draw.

Backing up Ellivere is the secondary commander, Gylwain, Casting Director. Gylwain also cares about roles, but replaces the token theme by letting you quickly enchant any nontoken creature entering under your control.

A large part of the deck focuses on pulling Aura enchantments out of your graveyard, allowing you to maintain your momentum even if a creature is removed from play. You can also make a whole menagerie of creature tokens with

Ellivere of the Wild Court

When Liberated Livestock dies, create a 1/1 white Cat creature token with lifelink, a 1/1 white Bird creature token with flying, and a 2/4 white Ox creature token. For each of those tokens, you may put an Aura card from your hand and/or graveyard onto the battlefield attached to it.

Ox Drover

Ox Drover can’t be blocked by Oxen.

Whenever Ox Drover enters the battlefield or attacks, target opponent creates a 2/4 white Ox creature token and you draw a card.

Three generic, one white enchantment – Aura – Rare

When enchanted creature attacks, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal an Aura card. You may put that card onto the battlefield. If you don’t, put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Unfinished Business

Three generic, two white sorcery – Rare

Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield, then return up to two target Aura and/or Equipment cards from your graveyard to the battlefield attached to that creature.(If the Auras can’t enchant that creature, they remain in your graveyard.)

Four generic, one green enchantment – Aura – Rare

Enchanted creature gets +5/+5 and has “Whenever this creature attacks, create a Monster Role token attached to up to one target attacking creature."(Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample.)

When Giant Inheritance is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return it to its owner’s hand.

Knickknack Ouphe

X generic, one green creature – Ouphe – 1/1 – Rare

Knickknack Ouphe enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.

When Knickknack Ouphe enters the battlefield, reveal the top X cards of your library. You may put any number of Aura cards with mana value X or less from among them onto the battlefield. Then put all cards revealed this way that weren’t put onto the battlefield on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Loamcrafter Faun

Two generic, one green creature – Satyr Druid – 3/3 – Rare

When Loamcrafter Faun enters the battlefield, you may discard one or more land cards. When you do, return up to that many target nonland permanent cards from your graveyard to your hand.

Timber Paladin

One generic, one green artifact creature – Knight – 1/1 – Rare

As long as Timber Paladin is enchanted by exactly one Aura, it has base power and toughness 3/3.

As long as Timber Paladin is enchanted by exactly two Auras, it has base power and toughness 5/5 and vigilance.

As long as Timber Paladin is enchanted by three or more Auras, it has base power and toughness 10/10 vigilance, and trample.

Fae Dominion

Faeries are a huge part of Eldraine’s identity. So much so that Throne of Eldraine, one of the last sets to come out before Commander decks became a standard part of the product lineup, had a Faerie-themed Brawl deck.

Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor is a straight-up Faerie typal commander, buffing Faeries and helping you build up some card advantage when they die.

Alela’s back as the secondary commander, with her latest card instead pushing you to cast spells on your opponent’s turn. The goad effect is a little limited thanks to that “one or more” clause, but this is going to be a tricky commander full of ways to interact with your opponents and stopping the crackback.

When Court of Vantress enters the battlefield, you become the monarch.

At the beginning of your upkeep, choose up to one other target enchantment or artifact. If you’re the monarch, you may create a token that’s a copy of it. If you’re not the monarch, you may have Court of Vantress become a copy of it, except it has this ability.

Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, you may exile it. If you do, create a token that’s a copy of that creature, except it’s a 1/1 Food Golem artifact creature in addition to its other types and it has “two generic, tap, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.”

Korvold, Gleeful Glutton
