Xboxis capitalising onStarfield’shype with its merch tie-ins, and I hate to say it, but I’m a total mark. I’ve already written abouthow I wanted to buy the limited edition Starfield controller but wasn’t sure because I might regret it… I bought the controller. It was just too pretty. I haven’t regretted it, either – it’s the second Xbox controller I own, and now my friends and I can play games together. I always use the Starfield one. It cost too much for me to risk anybody dropping it in a drunken fit of frustration, so I always pass off the regular black one that came with the console. I love the Starfield aesthetic, with its clean colours and bronze accents. Now they’ve announced the launch of console wraps, and a Starfield-themed one to boot. I want it.
I would prefer if my Xbox Series X was white, but obviously, those don’t exist. The new official console wraps make it easy for you to pretend, though, with not just a Starfield-inspired one launching October 18, but two camo prints launching November 10, one in shades of grey and the other a cool-tone with blues and purples. Obviously, the Starfield wrap is perfect for coordinating with my favourite controller, but the camo prints match other official wireless controller colourways.

The wraps are kept in place with silicone designs on the inside of the wrap and velcro enclosures, meaning you don’t have to muck around with adhesives or vinyl. This is definitely preferable if, like me, you’re clumsy and would absolutely find yourself screwing up a vinyl application, and these are more sustainable because they’re easily removed and reused, as opposed to vinyl which is one-use.
I’m not going to lie – the price is putting me off. $50 for a console wrap is pricey, but to be fair, so was the $80 controller, and I still bought it. The controller had a practical use, at least, which is how I justified it to myself, but shelling out for a console wrap for entirely aesthetic purposes definitely stings a little bit more. The price is actually comparable to those of third-party vinyl wrappers, and unlike the Xbox 360, there aren’t faceplates or other options to customise your console.
As far as I can tell, the Starfield wrapper isn’t a limited edition, which means I won’t have to rush to buy one before it sells out. I’ll actually get to play Starfield instead of making an impulsive decision, which will definitely assuage my guilt about the money I’m sure I’ll end up spending. I still don’t want to end up burning cash on merch for a game that doesn’t impress me, so when September 6 comes around, I’ll be sitting in front of my TV, crossing my fingers for a game that doesn’t let me down. I’m sick of looking at my Xbox and seeing a plain black box – I want someNASApunkto brighten up my room. But I’m still hesitant to do it if the game ends up being overhyped.
